 John O' Groats

John O' Groats

History of John O’Groats:

  • A mound near the John O’Groats House Hotel marks the site where Jan de Groot, a Dutchman, built his famous house during the reign of James IV (1488 – 1513).
  • Jan de Groot cleverly solved a family dispute about precedence by constructing an octagonal house with eight doors, one for each of his seven sons and himself. The house also featured an eight-sided table to ensure that no one occupied the head of the table.
  • Jan de Groot ran a ferry service to Orkney, charging 2 pence per trip. The coin for this denomination became known as the ‘groat’.
  • Jan de Groot’s name eventually transformed into John O’Groats over time.
  • His tombstone can be found in Canisbay churchyard, now moved inside the entrance porch for protection against the weather.
